RN Requirements

30 contact hours/2 years

One time Implicit Bias and Racism Training requirement:

  • Effective October 1, 2025, Maryland requires a one-time Implicit Bias and Racism Training for health license renewals, including Registered Nurses.
  • Licensees must complete an approved Implicit Bias and Racism Training program by their first renewal after the effective date.
  • Approved programs will be identified by the State Health Occupations Boards or by the Maryland Department of Health and may include ACCME-accredited courses.
  • Individual health occupations boards may allow continuing education credit for completion of the training; check your board’s renewal instructions for details.

LPN Requirements

30 contact hours/2 years

Advanced Practice Nursing Requirements

One time Implicit Bias and Racism Training requirement:

  • Licensees must complete an approved Implicit Bias and Racism Training program by their first renewal after the effective date.
  • Approved programs will be identified by the State Health Occupations Boards or by the Maryland Department of Health and may include ACCME-accredited courses.
  • Individual health occupations boards may allow continuing education credit for completion of the training; check your board’s renewal instructions for details.

Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS) 2 contact hour requirement:

  • APRNs who prescribe or dispense controlled dangerous substances in Maryland must complete and attest to a 2-hour continuing education course on the prescribing or dispensing of CDS when applying for initial CDS registration and at each CDS renewal.
  • Acceptable courses are those recognized by your professional licensing board or accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
  • The Office of Controlled Substances Administration (OCSA) does not pre-approve CE courses; maintain documentation showing the course title, provider, accreditation/board recognition, date completed, and certificate number for audits or attestation.
  • Past qualifying CME on CDS prescribing/dispensing can satisfy the requirement because the law did not set a lookback period.
